Over a year since the Matildas undertook tense and at times publicly acrimonious CBA negotiations, Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) have voiced concern over the contract negotiations for the Brisbane Roar.
"The PFA is working very closely with the players and Greg O'Rourke to ensure the impasse is resolved," said a PFA spokesperson.
"We have successfully navigated a number of issues with Brisbane Roar during this pre-season and expect this matter will also be resolved sensibly. As always, our number one priority is safeguarding the interests of the players."
The concern is in relation to the re-negotiation of W-League contracts for the upcoming season with the Roar players. While the Roar have yet to announce their squad for the 2016/17 season, the contention is that the club, who have been reported to be under financial strain, is set to offer the players a 40% cut on last season's $120,000 player payments.
In a club statement Brisbane Roar have affirmed their commitment to the team instead citing an increased investment in the W-League side.
"The salary cap investment by the Roar for 2016/17 season will increase from $50,000 to $150,000," said the Roar. "[It is a] greater investment in the team's coaching staff, medical department and support staff for the upcoming season."
"The Club over the past six weeks has been negotiating directly with individual players and is hopeful of being in a position to announce our Westfield W-League squad in the near future."
The PFA have raised the issue with new FFA Head of W-League Greg O'Rourke and new Brisbane Roar managing director Mark Kingsman.
This off-season has proved to be one of several changes for the Roar with former assistant Melissa Andreatta taking over from former head coach Belinda Wilson and assistant head coach Jeff Hopkins.
"Brisbane Roar Football Club is in positive dialogue with our Westfield W-League players in regard to contract renewals for the 2016/17 season."
These developments follow an off-season where the W-League players have been vocal in the need for increased pay and conditions.
It is a sensitive issue for the FFA and its clubs, particularly in light of the changing women's sport landscape where several sports including netball, cricket and AFL have announced pay deals that are currently higher than the W-League average.
The W-League commences on 5 November 2016.
