Lizette Cabrera, Storm Sanders, Priscilla Hon and Arina Rodionova were eliminated in the first round.

World number one Ash Barty had a hard fought match against American Bernarda Pera.  The first career meeting between the two opponents resulted in a two-hour match which was settled in the third set with a 6-4 3-6 6-2 victory.

Barty won her first career singles grand slam at this tournament in 2019.  She chose not to defend her title last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.  It had been feared that an arm injury which she picked up in May could keep her from the tournament.

When asked about it she stated "I'm not going to hide behind the fact I'm not quite 100% but I can guarantee that I will go out there with the right attitude every day and be really accepting of that and give it a crack no matter what. ”

Fellow Australian Ajla Tomljanovic also won her first round match of the French Open.   The number 76 seeded Queenslander did this in straight sets 6-2 6-4 against Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova.   She will meet 31th seeded Pavlyuchekova in the second round.

Astra Sharma also won her match in straight sets 7-6 6-2 against Romanian Irina Bara.  The Perth native’s next singles match will be against 25th seeded Jabeur.

This will be the first meeting between the two since Sharma beat Jabeur at the MUSC Health Women’s Open in April.  This shock win lead to her first career WTA singles title.

Sharma is also playing in the doubles tournament, with American partner Hayley Carter.  They will meet German Vivian Heisen and Czech Kveta Peschke in the first round.

Townsville native Lizette Cabrera was eliminated in the first round.  The 151rst seeded 23-year-old was beaten by 2-6 and 1-6 by the 32nd seeded Chinese Xiyu Wang.

Storm Sanders was beaten by the 14th seeded Belgian Elise Mertens in straight sets.  Priscilla Hon was also beaten in straight sets, by American Francesca Di Lorenzo.

Arina Rodionova lost to Indian Ankita Raina in the three sets. Rodionova will play in the doubles tournament as well, partnered with Ukrainian Kichenok.

Ellen Perez, who had failed to pass through the third round of the qualifying tournament for the women’s singles, will be also be playing in the women’s doubles tournament with Chinese partner Zheng.

It should be an exciting match as they are meeting Venus Williams and Coco Gauff in their first round.
