Queenslander Ash Barty has become just the seventh Australian women to win a US Open women’s doubles title when she combined with American CoCo Vandeweghe.
Both Barty and Vandeweghe landed their maiden Grand Slam title after saving three match points to edge out second-seeded Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic 3-6 7-6(2) 7-6(6).
It was the first-ever women’s doubles Grand Slam final had been decided in a third-set tiebreak.

Leading up to the final the duo had lost all their major doubles finals with Barty and the now retired Casey Dellacqua, falling short at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in 2013 and at last year’s French Open.
While Vandeweghe had missed out on the mixed doubles title at both the US Open and Australian Open in 2016.
Lifting the trophy caps off an exciting three weeks in New York which saw her make the fourth round for the first time at a Grand Slam and she also won the US Open Sportsmanship Award, recognising excellence in sportsmanship during the American lead-up events and the final Grand Slam of the season.
