It took Ash Barty just over an hour to defeat Tunisian qualifier and former junior doubles partner Ons Jabeur 6-1 6-3.

It was hot conditions on the court for Barty, who was still recovering from a virus which forced her to withdraw from an event last week.

“Obviously it’s pretty brutal conditions out there – nice and warm and humid and pretty energy-sapping really, a bit like Brisbane to me,” Barty told AAP.

“It was nice to get off to a good start and kind of consolidate in the middle of the second set there," she said.

Barty now sets up a second-round meeting with Czech Lucie Safarova after beating Petra Martić 6-4 6-4.

Meanwhile, fellow Australian Gavrilova has a tough second round match up against Viktoria Azarenka after crushing Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-0 6-0.

Tomorrow morning will feature three Australians at Flushing Medows with Sam Stosur up against Caroline Wozniacki while Australians Ajla Tomljanovic and Lizette Cabrera face each other.
