The Australian Women's team have progressed to the top eight of the FINA Youth World Championships after a hard-fought 6-3 victory over Canada.

Spain, Greece, USA and the Netherlands all finished top of their Groups, while Hungary, Italy and Russia along with Australia won their classification matches to progress to the quarterfinals.

Strong performances by the Aussies in the group stage against Uzbekistan (18-5) and Brazil (15-6) set the girls up for a physical match against Greece, resulting in a 9-9 draw. Decided by goal difference, the Greeks finished top of Group B earning them a day off.

Overnight, the Aussies defeated Canada 6-3 to progress through to the quarterfinals.

Australia will now turn their attention to the strong water polo nation of Netherlands who were undefeated after their group stage.

The team will meet either the Italians or Team USA depending on results between the two matches in either the semi-finals or 5-8 play off classifications.
