With two weeks worth of soccer there is plenty to catch up on including assists, goals, and plenty of Aussies vs Aussies matchups.

USA

Two weeks ago, the NWSL weekend started with the Portland Thorns keeping their unbeaten streak alive when they travelled to the Western New York Flash.  Alanna Kennedy and the Flash fell 2-0 and have now fallen to 4th place in the NWSL standings.  Hayley Raso continues to be a regular sub for the Thorns when she entered the game in the 77th minute.

Kennedy almost provided the Flash with a goal from one of her free kicks.

The Orlando Pride lost another close one, this time to the Washington Spirit 2-0.  Laura Alleway and Steph Catley were a part of the starting back line for the Pride.

Catley and Alleway once again provide chances for the Pride to score goals from their set pieces.

Kyah Simon and the Boston Breakers faced off against the league leaders, the Chicago Red Stars over the weekend.  Unfortunately, the Breakers fell 3-0 and remain in last place in the NWSL.

The Breakers saw chances to put away some goals including a near miss from Simon.

The NWSL weekend games wrapped up when the Houston Dash hosted Kansas City FC.  Lydia Williams and Ellie Brush were able to help the Dash keep a clean sheet until the 80th minute when FC Kansas City was able to score the lone goal of the match.

Williams continues to be impressive in goal and be among the top goalkeepers in the league.

The Portland Thorns had to play host to another game later in the week where they took on the Chicago Red Stars.  The Thorns were able to gain three points and secure the top spot in the league with a 2-0 win over the Red Stars.  Hayley Raso was subbed into the game in the 85th minute.

Even with getting into the game late, Raso was able to help create some offense for Portland.

A total of four Aussies faced off against each other when the Orlando Pride hosted the Houston Dash in a midweek game.  Lydia Williams and Ellie Brush were once again key to keeping the Pride out of the net, but their valiant efforts couldn’t stop another heart breaking last minute goal.  The Pride remain unbeaten at home due in part to Steph Catley’s full game performance and Laura Alleway’s entrance into the game in the 60th minute.

Williams may be in goal for the Dash and Catley may be holding down the defense for the Pride, but both are continuing to stop the opposing players from putting the ball in the back of the net.

To start play this past weekend the Boston Breakers played against the Western New Flash.  A total of 8 goals were scored, tying an NWSL record, however a 7-1 Flash win provided a lopsided game.  Alanna Kennedy was on the winning side of this game against her Matilda teammate Kyah Simon.

Even fans were torn about which team to root for when Simon and Kennedy square off.

The next game of the weekend saw Sky Blue FC travel to the Washington Spirit.  Sam Kerr may have been on the injured list for some time this season for Sky Blue, but she needed no time to get back to scoring goals.  Actually, with less than 50 seconds and one touch after being subbed into the game in the 63rd minute, Kerr netted her first goal of the season.  The goal ended up being the game winner with Sky Blue winning 2-1.

Plenty of people were watching the game hoping for Kerr to score, including many of her Matildas’ teammates.

The final NWSL game of the weekend saw Laura Alleway and Steph Catley face off against Hayely Raso and the Portland Thorns.  Raso entered the game for the Thorns in the 63rd minute with the score tied 0-0.  27 minutes later with the score now tied 1-1, Raso played a one touch pass off to her teammate Lindsey Horan who was able to score the game winning goal.  The game keeps the Thorns undefeated on the season and they handed the Pride their first home loss.

Catley once again provided offensive opportunities for the Pride, but the team was unable to finish them off.

Europe

Jenna McCormick's side Stjarnan continues on their winning run in Iceland with a strong 3-0 against Valur with McCormick notching up another 90 minutes.  It was a good time to put in a strong performance with new Icelandic President elect Guðni  Jóhannesson on hand for the match.

Two weeks ago, in the Damallsvenskan League, Mallbackens IF played Eskilstuna United.  Mallbackens IF was able to win 2-1, but Tameka Butt was not with the club for the game.

This past week Butt entered the game for the Mallbackens in the 64th minute, but the team was unable to earn the win against Kristianstads and ended up losing 1-0.

There was another Aussie vs. Aussie potential matchup when the Doncaster Rover Belles played against the Notts County Ladies FC.  Aivi Luik played a full 90 minutes for Notts County and helped the team secure a 2-1 win.  However, Alex Gummer did not notch any minutes for Doncaster Rover Belles in the loss.

Asia

Aussies faced off against each other in Korea two weeks ago when Gema Simon of Suwon FMC played against Racheal Quigley of Hwacheon KSPO.  Quigley was able to help propel her team to victory by providing an assist and a goal in Hwacheon KSPO’s 2-0 win.

Racheal Quigley faced another Aussie this past week when her team faced off against Amy Jackson and the Incheon HS Red Angels.  The game was an even match that ended in a 0-0 tie.

This week Gema Simon and the Suwon FMC were able to bounce back from their loss and beat Daejeon Sportstoto 1-0.
