Australia’s Youth team will head to the semi-finals at the FINA Youth World Championships after a close, one-goal win against the Netherlands early this morning.
A physical and high intensity game from opening whistle saw the Dutchwomen put the first goal up on the scoreboard. The Aussies responded with three goals one after another, however found themselves equal 3-3 at the first quarter break.
At halftime, scores were still locked (5-5) with defence being key for both teams throughout the match. Australia managed to gain a one goal lead at the end of the third quarter (7-6) which was enough to secure their ticket to the semi-final with a 8-7 final score.
A triple from Queenslander Charlize Andrews earned her MVP honours, with fellow Queenslander Abby Andrews, West Australian Jamie Oberman, and New South Welshwomen Carla Traplin, Hayley Ballesty and Matilda Kearns all netting one goal each.
Head Coach Dusan Damjanovic says the patience his team showed was what he enjoyed most about the victory.
"The girls were really patient in the crucial moments, it’s not easy at their age to remain calm and control emotions, especially in attack.
"We were ready for our moments, they had pride in everything they did and in the end the result was positive for us.”
The Australians will now look towards their match against the Italians who defeated the USA 7-6 in their quarterfinal. There is a long-standing rivalry between Australia and Italy, which will no doubt be on display at 8.40pm local time today (Sunday, 2 September at 4.40am AEST).
