Now the dust has settled on the nerve-racking semifinal, the Matildas prepare for the final of the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup against a formidable and familiar opponent, Japan.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
With Japan ranked 11th in the world and the Matildas ranked sixth, this final is truly a battle of grand proportions.
Both teams have been equally impressive at the tournament with two wins and two draws.
In recent clashes, despite Australia winning each one, Japan still found the back of the net.
Their 2018 Asian Cup match ended at 1-1, 2017 Tournament of Nations Friendly at 4-2 and the 2016 Olympic Qualifiers at 3-1.
Expect a thrilling game between two of the toughest and most successful football sides in Asia, with Japan playing to extend their Asian Cup championship reign and Australia looking to take the crown.
“Japan are technically very good, their movement is good, they know the game, they’re tactically switched on,” coach Alen Stajcic said.
The deciding factor will be who is able to come out firing and lock in some goals early.
