Round 3 of AFLW served up some surprises, with three tight finishes and no teams left undefeated for the season.
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY 7.6 (48) D COLLINGWOOD 5.5 (35)
Sunday at Olympic Park Oval
Major signs of improvements for Collingwood, but GWS proved just too strong, killing their hopes of a Grand Final appearance.
Collingwood’s Brittany Bonnici and captain Steph Chiocci scored the openers, leading by 14 points at quarter time.
The second quarter was scrappy as a result of the wind, with the two major scores by Giant Aimee Schmidt coming towards the end of the term.
The much maligned Moana Hope contributed with two goals and an assist in the second half, but the Giants kept pushing. Collingwood snatched the lead by the end of the third quarter, in the midst of a steady back-and-forth.
Ultimately, it would be the Giants with their first win of the season, with Courtney Gum and Phoebe McWilliams both adding two goals to win by 13 points.
