Once again Australian players made their presence known abroad with strong performances for their overseas clubs in Asia, Europe and the US.
Once again Australian players made their presence known abroad with strong performances for their overseas clubs in Asia, Europe and the US.
Eight players headed to the National Women's Soccer League with Sam Kerr (WNY Flash), Caitlin Foord (Sky Blue FC), Lisa De Vanna (Boston Breakers / Washington Spirit) and Emily van Egmond (Chicago Redstars) returned for the second season.
This time round they were joined by Stephanie Catley (Portland Thorns), Katrina Gorry (FC Kansas City), Lydia Williams and Teigen Allen (both WNY Flash).
While the Flash couldn't back up their premiership winning first season, Kerr followed her stellar "rookie" year with a bigger second season. With star forward Abby Wambach injured, the forward was the focal point of the attack scoring a team high 9 goals.
Kerr also became the first Australian to be named the NWSL "Player of the Week".
Flash teammate Williams also had a strong season as custodian before an ACL cruelly cut short her season.
Another standout performer in the NWSL was Catley who, in her inaugural season, was named in the NWSL Second XI despite playing only half a season.
The left back started shakily with the Portland Thorns but grew to become one of the best attacking full backs in the league. By the end of the season Catley's left foot had found its range with the 4 assists.
Katrina Gorry had an up and down introduction to the NWSL. With the star player for Kansas City, Lauren Holiday, occupying her favoured position, the attacking midfielder found limited game time.
However Gorry did manage to show glimpses of her best with those limited opportunities and ended the season on a high as FC Kansas City took out the second NWSL Championship.
Meanwhile in the USL W-League, several Australian W-League players found off-season playing time including Chloe Logarzo, Ashley Spina, Tara Andrews and Kristy Moore.
Logarzo adapted quickly to the pace for new outfit Colorado Pride, finishing the season with 6 goals, 7 assists (3rd in the competition) and 19 points (4th in the competition).
For her efforts Logarzo was named the Rookie of the Year and in the USL W-League team of the Year.
In the UK Caitlin Friend and Danielle Brogan landed a place in the Notts County team for 2014 FA Women's Super League season.
Both Friend and Brogan found themselves regular members in the squad as the Magpies navigated an inconsistent season, that eventually saw them remain the top division.
Over in Asia Brisbane trio Clare Polkinghorne (INAC Kobe), Tameka Butt and Elise Kellond-Knight (both Iga FC), found themselves at opposite ends of the table in a move to the Japanese Nadeshiko League.
Polkinghorne played regularly for Kobe as they tried to reel in the competition leaders while Butt and Kellond-Knight were involved in a weekly relegation battle for Iga FC.
While Kobe couldn't catch the leaders and win another title, Iga FC did survive to fight another season.
