True North Research’s 2018 BenchMark Report found that while big named teams like Collingwood Magpies have a large number of supporters, it is women's teams that have a higher emotional connection.

The report delved into the specific emotional connection that members, fans and irregular supporters have with a particular club or team.

“Emotions matter because they drive outcomes, affect long-term advancement, and protect a property when in crisis," Director at True North Research Georgie Maynard said.

"It examines the very heart of the relationship between a sports property and sports fans and uncovers the drivers of emotional connection."

Australia's women's rugby 7s team topped the list for emotional connection among the 62 teams.

The 2016 Rio Olympic gold medalist topped all 16 NRL, 18 AFL, eight super netball and five super rugby clubs plus a number of national teams included in the report.

Australians are most proud of the Diamonds, who recently lifted the Quad Series and Constellation Cup while the Matildas were trusted to uphold the integrity of the sport.
