Melbourne City are the best team in the land. Western Sydney have been the fairy tale story this season.

On Sunday at 1.30 at ABD Stadium, we will see whether the underdogs from Sydney can produce one of the great finals upsets against a team labelled as invincible.

Melbourne City

Strengths

Take your pick. City have quality all over the park. In every key position they have a star.

Steph Catley, Ellie Carpenter and Emily Van Egmond have 77 chances created between them. In other words, City have a lot of avenues to goal.

Lauren Barnes, Rebekah Stott, Emma Checker and Emily Van Egmond occupy the top four places in the league when it comes to passes completed. This shows City can hold the ball and dictate play as they see fit.

At the back they have conceded only four goals in 12 games, a remarkable statistic.

Weaknesses

No less than six Matildas will be returning from Vietnam only 72 hours before a final. Steph Catley, Lydia Williams, Kyah Simon, Ellie Carpenter, Emily van Egmond and Aivi Luik.

The players will naturally be tired and jet lagged and if the game goes to extra time, it will be tough.

Key player

Yukari Kinga - the Japanese international is one of the most creative in the league. When City need a goal she inevitably provides.

Her trophy cabinet is full of domestic and international trophies. She is a winner and knows what it takes.

Western Sydney Wanderers

Strengths

Kristen Hamilton has the quality of a Golden Boot winner. She didn’t play against Melbourne City a few weeks ago due to suspension, which means she is a wildcard in the pack for Dean Heffernan. City won’t know how to play her.

Hamilton can sniff out a goal and will need to find the net this weekend if an upset is to happen.

A quality player who is very much underrated.

Underdogs often play with no pressure. Not many expect the Wanderwomen to win this weekend and that makes them dangerous. Against City three weeks ago the team were cautious and didn’t take City on.

They played right into the hands of the Premiers Plate winners. This weekend with Kristen Hamilton and Ella Mastrantonio back into the team, they have the creativity and class to catch Melbourne City by surprise.

Team balance. The Wanderers have a number of avenues to goal. Courtney Nevin down back can run down the flanks and deliver explosives into the box.

Ella Mastrantonio in the middle working with Kyra Cooney-Cross. Sam Staab with her long throw-ins and presence at corners can be dangerous up forward too. Kristen Hamilton can make a goal out of nothing as well, of course.

Weaknesses

They're prone to the odd howler which can lead to costly goals. Can not afford something like this at the best of times let alone against a team like Melbourne City. The Wanderwomen need to be focussed for 90-120 minutes and ensure there are no brain fades.

Lack of depth. It is hard to replace quality like Lynn Williams and Denise O’Sullivan. The youngsters like Susan Phonsongkham, Chloe Middleton and Cortnee Vine have tried their best but it’s been a challenge.

These three will have a chance to make a name for themselves though and there is no better place to do it than a final.

Key player

Kyra Cooney-Cross is only 18. But make no mistake this kid is a super star of the future. Now into here third W-League season, we need to see this future Matilda step up on the big stage. No better place than a final.

She's managed 345 passes at an accuracy rate of 75%. She has made 15 key passes and has had 26 shots this season.

She has only reaped four goals but they have all been beauties. Kickstarted the Wanderers season with a match winner in Round One, then netted a double in the first Sydney derby.

She is decent in defence too, 10 interceptions, is successful with 63% of her tackles and wins the majority of her duels.

She has the foot skills to trick opponents and be creative for her team. She supplements the experienced duo of Amy Harrison and Ella Mastrantonio well and adds another dimension to the midfield.

Nevertheless, she needs more touches in games to enhance her involvement. This weekend could be the day she makes her mark on the big stage.

Key matchup

Courtney Nevin v Ellie Carpenter - two youngsters who will go toe to toe for many years to come, but will also possibly be Matilda teammates one day.

Nevin has had a brilliant second season and has been a revelation down back. She runs all day and makes clutch tackles. Can also get involved in attack and her lethal left foot is dangerous.

Carpenter is a star. Creates chance after chance and will always be lively. She can be prone to being caught out down back however, and Nevin will need to be able to take advantage of this if the Wanderwomen are any chance of winning this weekend.
