The 44-year-old named his 23-player squad to face the USA next month on Friday morning with five new faces from the team that won the Cup of Nations last month.

Mary Fowler, Elizabeth Ralston (uncapped), Katrina Gorry, Chloe Logarzo and Tegan Micah (uncapped) came in for Amy Harrison, Alex Chidiac, Teresa Polias, Princess Ibini and Eliza Campbell.

Many believe the Matildas, who are ranked sixth in the world at the moment, will be Australia's best chance at bringing home the nations first World Cup.

However, there is still a lot that needs to be done to have that chance and while the Matildas lifted the inaugural Cup of Nations trophy, there is still work to do for Milicic to implement his style of play.

From his first three games, it looks like the former Socceroos assistant coach wants to put emphasis on keeping possession and playing it out from the back at all costs. It's a similar style to what Ange Postecoglou implemented while at Brisbane Roar and with the Socceroos.

Milicic has just 78 days to do just that before the Matildas face Italy in Valenciennes.

However, he will have a tough time narrowing down his squad with the likes of Kyah Simon still needing to return from injury while dual-coder Jenna McCormick still hasn't received a call-up despite her recent W-League form.

Although Milicic reiterated to media on Friday that players still have time to stake their claims for a World Cup spot.

“I wouldn’t want to put a number on it but what I will say is the players that are training in a good type of environment and that are playing competitive games and doing well, they’re naturally going to have means of getting into the squad," he said.

“I was happy with how the first camp went but just because players have missed out now doesn’t mean they’re not a chance to be on the plane to France."

In the last 12 months, there have been 34 players named across Asian Cup, Tournament of Nations and four friendly matches. Within this group, 17 are playing abroad at the moment, 10 playing in local leagues back in Australia and the rest have no announced their plans.

The current 23-player squad also oozes experience with 14 players selected in the 2015 World Cup squad and 17 part of the AFC 2018 Asian Cup campaign.

For Canada, Alen Stajcic chooses a 23-player squad so it is really anyone game still and Milicic has a long list of players he is keeping an eye on before needing to make a decision.

“(I) want to see the players live, see how they take in the information, how they handle themselves, how they execute the footballing style and then I know there will be a tough decision to make in mid-May," he said.

“We’ve had to name a 50-girl squad for the World Cup – that’s all we can choose our squad from – so that’s where we’re going to monitor players, from that 50.

“We’re keeping tabs on all of them, what they’re doing, where they are in fitness, where they’re playing, how often they’re playing.”

The Matildas face the USA on April 4 from 9pm local time (April 5 at 12:30pm AEDT) at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Colorado.
