The 16-year-old made three appearances for the Matildas before she was made unavailable for a call-up ahead of the two-match series against Chile in November.

Instead of pulling on the green and gold, she trained alongside her siblings Quivi, Louise, Ciara and Seamus in Europe, with Cristiano Ronaldo's former speed coach Mick Clegg.

This decision concerned many Matildas fans as Mary had the ability to also represent the Republic of Ireland due to her father being born there.

Her two older siblings, Quivi and Ciara had already represented Ireland at a youth level.

After the situation, then head coach Alen Stajcic labelled the Fowler family as living an “alternative lifestyle” but also believed Mary was one of the best young talents.

However, it was reported by the Sydney Morning Herald that the family were upset about the comments.

Matildas coach Ante Milicic also thought Mary was a bright talent and worked on trying to bring her back into the national team fold once again.

“I don’t think you need to do a sell job when it comes to representing the national team,” he said.

“With no disrespect to other national teams and players, you see it often in the men’s game, have sometimes a difficult decision to make but I’m very delighted that she’s interested to play for Australia.

“She’s been part of the setup before and for her now to commit to playing for Australia is fantastic news.

“She’s got a long career ahead of her and I just feel with her coming into our setup, our environment and where we are as a footballing nation that can only benefit her both short term and long term."

Fowler has been training overseas for the past few months including with Chelsea Ladies.

Recently she returned to Australia and signed with NPL Women's NSW side Bankstown City alongside sister Ciara. In her only appearance so far, she scored two goals in the teams 4-2 win over the Emerging Jets.

Alongside her NPLW commitments, she has been training with Matildas assistant coach Gary van Egmond in the Future Matildas program.

Those who have coached Fowler have described her as a hard worker, a great technician and a lethal finisher that can play with both feet.

“When I first started the job, I researched as much as possible and watched as much footage of her and other players as I could," he said.

“She was one that we had on the radar immediately."

While Milicic has high praise of Leichhardt FC junior he told media on Friday that with everything happening so quickly before the Cup of Nations it wasn't the right time to bring Fowler into the squad so he's looking forward to seeing what she can do.

“I’m looking forward to her coming into camp so I can see her live and see her quality on the field."
