Matildas and Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr has taken out the Best International Women's Soccer Player award.
Kerr beat the likes of 2017 FIFA Women's Player of the Year Lieke Martens, Danish Football Player of the Year Pernille Harder, and Jodie Taylor.
The ESPYS — Excellent in Sports Performance Yearly — is an award presented by US network ABC that recognises individual and team achievements. Winners this year included Winter Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim and the USA Women's Ice Hockey team.
“Some of the best athletes in the world received recognition at the ESPYS today, and as a football community we are exceptionally proud that an Australian footballer, Samantha Kerr, was among them,” FFA CEO David Gallop said.
“Recognition of Sam’s performances on an international level speaks volumes of her achievements for her clubs and country, and we can’t wait to see her playing for the Westfield Matildas next week at the 2018 Tournament of Nations."
Kerr joined the Red Stars are a record-breaking NWSL season with the Sky Blues, scoring 17 goals (the most in one season by a player) and winning the MVP Award.
It was only a fortnight ago the 24-year-old became the first player to 50 goals in the NWSL.
On the international stage, Kerr became the third Australian female to win the AFC Women's Footballer of the Year Award and was a finalist for the FIFA Female Player of the Year.
Sam was also nominated for the Best NWSL Player but Seattle Reign midfielder Megan Rapinoe took home the award.
