Kerr has been shortlisted beside Pernille Harder, Lucy Bronze, Dzsenifer Marozśan and The Best FIFA Women's Player 2017 winner Lieke Martens.

The award is in it's fourth year and not only celebrated the skills and commitment of the individual players but also the popularity of women's football.

"The five shortlisted players are at the top of their game, and fans around the world now have a chance to vote for their favourite player," said Mary Hockaday, Controller of BBC World Service English.

The shortlist was selected by a large panel of experts involved in the game from all around the world, including coaches, players, administrators and journalists.

“I guess it’s pretty crazy to think out of the whole world there’s only five players that have been nominated," Kerr said.

"There are so many great players that I look up to and I don’t put myself in the same sentence as them so obviously it’s a huge honour and a pretty surreal feeling to be honest,” she said.

Past winners of the award include Norwegian footballer Ada Hegerberg (2017), former Melbourne City star Kim Little (2016), Nigerian footballer Asisat Oshoala (2015).

Voting will close on 8th May (6PM AEST) and the winner will be announced on Tuesday 22nd May during Sport Today on BBC World Service on BBC World News (Wednesday 23rd May).
