Sam Kerr has become the first W-League marquee as she re-signs with Perth Glory for the 2018/19 season.
Traditionally, the marquee fund has been reserved for A-League players with clubs like Sydney FC who dipped into for Dwight Yorke and Alessandro Del Piero, Melbourne City for Tim Cahill and Melbourne Victory for current A-League Marquee Keisuke Honda.
The announcement is a landmark moment for women's football in Australia with FFA recognising the important role that W-League plays in growing the game.
"I think it is just the start and I think it would be awesome if every club had one," Kerr told Fox Sports.
"I think if we were to host something like the World Cup and be able to promote things in our league where others aren't then that will be a huge step for women's football not just in Australia but around the world," she said.
Kerr, the reigning W-League Golden Boot and joint Julie Dolan Medalist, will spend her four consecutive season with Glory.
The 25-year-old scored 13 of Perth's 25 goals last season but the club missed out on the finals as they finished sixth.
Kerr joins Eliza Campbell, Lexie Moreno, Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, Rachel Hill, Morgan Aquino, Abbey Meakins and Leticia McKenna as Glory continue to build their squad.
Sam Kerr will speak exclusively with Fox Sports Thursday night from 6pm.
