The AFC Committee has ratified significant changes to the U/16 and U/19 AFC Women's Championships, set to take place before the 2023 World Cup.
The AFC U/19 and U/16 Championships will change to reflect the World Cup cycles, becoming the U/20 and U/17 Championships respectively.
They will be held in the same year as the relative World Cups, as the principal Asian qualification tournament. These rules would bring the tournaments in-line with regulation surrounding the men's competitions.
The proposed dates for the AFC U-20 Women’s Championship 2022 Qualifiers Round 1 are from March 6 to 14, 2021, with Qualifiers Round 2 proposed for August 18 to 22, 2021 and the Finals recommended for February 7 to 20, 2022.
The proposed dates for the AFC U-17 Women’s Championship 2022 Qualifiers Round 1 are April 3 to 11, 2021, with the Qualifiers Round 2 scheduled for September 22 to 26, 2021 and the Finals to be staged from April 4 to 17, 2022.
This is set to potentially change the age structure of the Junior Matildas and Young Matildas, whose age groups may also be brought in line with the updated regulation.
These changes will not affect the upcoming AFC U/19 Championships, to be held in Thailand in November, in which the Young Matildas are set to take part.
