Heather Garriock has continued the revitalisation of Canberra United with the signing of two fresh-faced local ACT talents for the upcoming season.
With nine players locked down for 2019/20, Canberra's squad is finally beginning to take shape and there's reason for optimism if you're a Canberran this season.
Laura Hughes is the club's reigning Rising Star winner and joins after a strong campaign in the youth leagues, where she'll provide backup to established pairing Karly Roestbakken and Olivia Price in the United midfield.
Plus, she says she loves Canberra, so hold on to her, we reckon.
“I love Canberra and I love playing for them,” Hughes said.
“It’s good to have a core group come back this year, and some new faces, and we’re looking forward to building on what we learnt last year.”
The other of the dynamic duo is exciting 17-year-old forward Hayley Taylor-Young, who'll provide backup to Norwegian legend Elise Thorsnes as Canberra look to improve on a misfiring strikeforce last campaign.
“I’m really excited to be a member of the Canberra United team this season,” Taylor-Young said.
“I believe the CUA program has helped me develop my skills and understanding of the game and has given me a great platform to build from at the next level.”
Heather Garriock is insistent that Canberra's future relies on the local talent that exists in the ACT competitions.
“It’s so important that we have talented, local players coming through into our Canberra United team.
“Laura and Hayley have both come through the Canberra United pathway programs and similar to Karly [Roestbakken], are great role models for the younger players in the Canberra United setup.
“Hayley had a tremendous year with CUA, she’s lightning quick and can use both her left and right foot, so she can cause real havoc for defenders.”
