The Queensland Firebirds have ended West Coast Fever undefeated streak with a 71-61 victory in the Suncorp Super Netball.
The Fever had dominated the league in the opening four rounds of the season, only losing four quarters but the Firebirds stuck to their game plan and shut out Jhaniele Fowler.
It was the Firebirds frontcourt combination of Romelda Aiken and Gretel Tippett which proved impossible to stop and helped their side to victory.
The Fever had trouble early on, even calling a timeout in the opening five minutes as the Firebirds found themselves with a three-goal lead and while Fever pulled it back to just one goal, it didn't last long.
The Firebirds raced out to an unbeatable lead in the final quarter.
For the Fever, it gives them some big takeaways to work on.
“We’ve taken a lot out of this game as to what we can deliver out there and it’s certainly given us some homework to look at some other areas of the game,” coach Stacey Marinkovich said.
“We’ve just got to keep building our game and it’s about consistency, we got one quarter out there so it shows we can deliver under that type of pressure,” she added.
