A cold, damp night greeted Melbourne City in Newcastle and the equation was simple for the reigning champions; win or miss out on defending their title for the first time in their history.
With conditions somewhat reminiscent of a summer’s night in the northeast of England, it was fitting that a British theme set the scene for the opening goal.
A chip into the box from Jess Fishlock found Jodie Taylor who shrugged off Cass Davis, dinking the ball over the Jets goalkeeper before smashing home into the open net.
Two more first-half goals followed in quick succession to seal City’s place in the finals.
What went wrong for Newcastle?
Just like in their first clash with City this season the Jets were once again without key squad members due to injury and illness.
Both Tash Prior and Nikola Orgill rested along with attacker Courtney Vine.
As a result, Hannah Brewer was moved into central defence to partner Davis while Gema Simon came into the starting line-up.
However, the well-established backline was rocked by the changes and didn’t adapt quickly to City’s attack.
The Jets defence was caught out on key occasions in the first half with the first goal saw the back four and the central midfielder sitting too deep.
While the Taylor goal wasn't blocked properly.
Both the second and third goals came from identical set pieces, which have been the Jets achilleas heel because of poor marking.
In attack, Newcastle only created one clear shot on goal as Arin Gilliland forced Lydia Williams to save a shot heading for the top corner.
Jets lacked their usual combinations and penetration in front of goal, which that cost them and with a lack of options off the bench, they, unfortunately, had no way back into the game.
City hit their straps

They always rise to the occasion when it matters most don’t they?
Having just scraped into the finals last season and needing a win to do the same this season, they thrived under pressure.
City took a while to click, enduring a season of inconsistency but when it came to the crunch a team with the likes of Kyah Simon, Fishlock, Kinga, and Taylor in attack was never going to miss the finals.
With Fishlock pulling the strings the combination between her and Taylor paid dividends.
Sublime from @Jodes_14!

Their defence was largely untroubled as the Jets were unable to break them open as City became the first team to hold Newcastle scoreless all season.
The road ahead:
Both the Jets and Melbourne City will be traveling for the finals next weekend.
Newcastle have an excellent record against Sydney of late, unbeaten in their last three meetings and boast on of the best away records in the competition.
While City travel to Perry Park to face the Brisbane Roar who they haven’t beaten or scored against this season.
