Queensland Roar 2008/09 double

Queensland Roar created history by winning the inaugural Premiership and Championship double. They only lost one game all season, which was against Canberra United in round two but had their revenge in the grand final. In front of 4,554 at Ballymore, Lana Harch and Tameka Butt scored to see Roar lift the trophy.

The double has been completed three times since then with Sydney FC doing it the following season before Canberra United and Melbourne City also bagging the double.

Megan Rapinoe in W-League

Perhaps one of the biggest names to have graced the W-League during a two-game guest appearance with Sydney FC in 2011. The American influence was felt quickly, scoring the winner in the 83rd minute against Melbourne Victory. Want footage of the game? Unfortunately, the game was not a TV match and there is no footage of the game so the goal has been lost in W-League history.

Season 4 semi-final

It was a semi-final which had everything and it was one of the most intense battles throughout W-League history. Sydney were leading 1-0 courtesy of a Renee Rollason's strike in the 18th minute, with Roar desperately trying to find an equaliser, Sydney's Kylie Ledbrook went down with a cramp. Roar goalkeeper Casey Dumont, desperate to get the game re-started, tried to carry Ledbrook off the pitch.

When the game eventually re-started, Emily Gielnik, dubbed the super sub, scored in the 95th minute to take it to extra time. If you thought the drama was over, it's not. Kyah Simon received her marching orders after a second yellow for a foul on Vederana Popovic and an outraged Sydney FC coach, Alen Stajcic was sent to the stands.

Aivi Luik would go on to score the winning goal in the penalty shootout.

Adelaide break their drought

Adelaide United haven't had the best luck in the W-League, being one of the only founding teams never to make the finals. However, in the last game of the 2016/17 regular season, a drought was broken. On November 9, 2008 Adelaide beat Sydney FC 3-2 with goals from Sharon Black, Victoria Balomenos and an own goal. Adelaide waited nine years, three months and 20 days before they got their next win over Sydney.

Adelaide were coming good at the end of the 2016/17 season and had not in five games, including a draw to eventual Champions Melbourne City. Sitting on top of the table and ready to grab the Premiership with Sydney FC but Adelaide were about to let that happen. The scores were 0-0 at halftime but finished in a 5-2 win to Adelaide United with Adriana Jones double, Emily Hodgson, Sofia Huerta and an own goal helping them to victory.

It was only 12 goals

W-League is all about the unexpected, it's become a tradition each season to have a result surprise fans but this game from season five was something else.

It started off as a regular game with Sydney FC heading into halftime with a 2-1 lead over Perth Glory but a goal in the 56th minute from Aivi Luik sparked four goals in six minutes with Glory leading 4-3. However, it wasn't over with another four goals in 12 minutes and allowed Lisa De Vanna to round out her hat-trick with Perth winning 7-5.

Melbourne City three-peat

Melbourne City know how to win Grand Finals, there is no doubt about that. They took the W-league by storm in the 2015/16 season and went all the way to the grand final without dropping a single point. The first time that has happened in league history.

They continued this performance into the 2016/17 season and people started to ask the question: "Who can stop them?"

Well, that happened to be Canberra United in round six which saw City on the path of a winless streak until they faced Roar in round 13, a win would give them a chance at finals, and win they did. They were unstoppable again, going to the Grand Final and beating Glory 2-0.

Knowing they were a beatable side, clubs took it to Melbourne City in the 2017/18 season but they were still able to book their ticket in the top four. They beat Premiers Brisbane Roar, who they hadn't scored against all season, to reach the Grand Final where a Jess Fishlock and Jodie Taylor goal saw them become the first side to win three straight Championships in Australian national league history.

Sam Kerr's marquee deal

While only a recent moment, the announcement of Sam Kerr being the first ever women's marquee player has set a precedent for the future of the game in Australia. The marquee fund, which has previously only been used to bring the likes of Dwight York, Alessandro Del Piero, Tim Cahill and Keisuke Honda.

Kerr's announcement now opens the doors for future W-League players and their clubs to access funds.

Canberra United go undefeated

In front of a capacity crowd of 2,500 at McKellar Park, Canberra United were crowned Champions and also created history by having the first unbeaten W-League campaign.

They beat Roar 3-2, with Golden Boot winner Michelle Heyman scoring two of the goals, as Canberra ended their campaign with 12 wins and three draws

Victory change up W-League

The first five seasons of W-League were dominated by three clubs; Queensland/Brisbane Roar, Sydney FC and Canberra United with the latter team only missing the finals series once. So when the 2013/14 season rolled around, it followed a much similar path with all three making the top four alongside Melbourne Victory, who finished third.

That season Victory had the likes of Jess Fishlock, Lisa De Vanna, Steph Catley and Laren Barnes in their squad. They beat Sydney FC 3-2 in the semi-final before taking on two-time Champions and Premiers Roar in the Grand Final.

Goals from De Vanna and Barnes sealed the first time the Championship wouldn't be going to one of the big three.

Jets make finals again

It has been a long wait for Jets fans but they finally found themselves back in finals football. A 5-1 win against Canberra United in Round 13 ensure they would make the top four for the second time in their history. Katie Stengel scored a hat-trick and Emily van Egmond bagged a brace in the match.

They first made finals football in the inaugural season of W-League and waited nine years and one month for another chance. Unfortunately, they fell to Sydney FC 3-2 in extra time in what was another spectacular and heart pumping match.
