A game dominated by the Roar still had the Jets in the game for much of the match. The 2-1 scoreline does not feel like the right result, but is on brand for the majority of the W-League games this season.
Brisbane Roar
Mackenzie Arnold - 6
A pretty uneventful night for Arnold who had just two shots on goal come her way. Of those two shots she was only able to save one of them. Arnold’s defence helped keep the ball away from her, but the couple of times she was called upon weren't her best.
Carson Pickett - 9.5
Quite simply she was all over the pitch for the Roar. Pickett is a defender who goes box to box and was one of the best offensive threats for Brisbane today. Pickett also had some bruising tackles making her the best Roar player on the pitch.
Celeste Boureille - 8
When a team controls much of the possession it is usually due in large part to the midfield and today’s game was no exception. Boureille commanded the midfield which led to many of the chances for the Roar.
Clare Polkinghorne - 8.5
The skipper was able to get the Roar on the scoresheet while being in charge of a defence that only conceded one goal. Polkinghorne was just the player the Roar needed today on both ends of the field and quietly did her job like usual.
Indiah-Paige Riley - 6
One of the least effective forward for Brisbane. She was hardly in the action compared to her counterparts, Yallop and Raso. She was subbed off in the 53rd minute after just one shot on target.
Rylee Baisden - 6
Along with Riley, Baisden did not have much of an impact on offence for the Roar. She did not have too many chances and had just one shot on goal.
Katrina Gorry - 8.5
Played countless beautiful balls into her teammates, they were just unable to convert the chances. She was all over the pitch and a big reason the Roar had much of the possession.
Natalie Tathem - 7.5
Tathem had a solid day on the defence for the Roar. Perhaps her biggest blunder was committing the foul on Kingsley which led to the free kick that allowed the Jets to go up 1-0.
Tameka Yallop - 7.5
Yallop had the most shots on target for the Roar, but her biggest chances missed the frame completely. She had a wide open shot and another almost wide open shot where she sailed both chances.
Hayley Raso - 7.5
How did Hayley Raso not score today? She had eight total shots, but just two on goal. Raso looked dangerous and did a lot of the hard work leading up to the goal but just could not finish it off.
Isobel Dalton - 8
The Jets were limited in front of Brisbane’s goal and that was in large part thanks to the defence of Dalton. She was rock solid on the backline.
Subs
Hollie Palmer (52’) - 9
A second half sub coming in with the game tied 1-1 where it honestly should have been about 3-0 for her club. She was able to get the go ahead goal for her squad and be the spark they needed for the win.
Elise Kellond-Knight (75’) - 7.5
The first time Kellond-Knight has suited up for the Roar since 2015 was nothing special, but the fact that she was on the pitch was enough. She has been away on injury this year and returned to the Roar this season to make an impact. Her 15 minutes she had today is just the start of what she will be able to do for Brisbane.
Newcastle Jets
Claire Coelho - 9
Shot after shot was stopped by Coehlo. The Roar kept pressing and it seemed they would score a handful of goals, but Coehlo made diving saves to keep them out of the goal. She may have given up two goals, but compared to the 15 shots she endured is quite a feat. Easily the player of the game for the Jets.
Hannah Brewer - 6
A member of the defence that was getting outplayed by the Roar offence all game. She was able to slow down the Roar a few times, but was mainly saved by the play of Coelho in goal.
Cassidy Davis - 7.5
The right side of the Roar’s offence was less of a presence than their right side due in part to Davis. Still the Roar were attacking from all angles and Davis spent a good majority of the game chasing down attackers.
Gema Simon - 7.5
As always Simon was the heart and soul for the Jets during this game. Herself and the rest of the Jets defence got bested on multiple occasions, but were bailed out by Coehlo in net. Simon did have quality service from her corner kicks that the Jets could not finish. She also took the free kick that led to the Jets' lone goal.
Tara Andrews - 8
Opened up the scoring in the game which happened to be her first shot on goal as well as the Jets’ first shot on goal. She was all over the pitch for the Jets and a thorn in the Roar’s side as the only one to get a couple of shots on goal.
Libby Copus-Brown - 7.5
She felt like more of a defensive midfielder this game than an attacking midfielder. She like most of her teammates spent the majority of the game chasing Roar players.
Tessa Tamplin - 7
One of the players tasked with having to slow down the Roar’s left side attack. She was always in the mix and kept very busy, but was bested on multiple occasions by Raso.
Jenna Kinglsey - 7
While the Jets’ defence was busy for most of the game the offence had chances few and far between. Kinglsey had little impact in the offensive third.
Clare Wheeler - 6
Spent most of the match playing defence and unable to get much offence goign for the Jets. Had a few costly turnovers as well that were luckily not translated into Roar goals.
Nikki Flannery - 8
She was able to assist Andrews’ goal and get the Jets on the scoresheet for just the sixth time this season. Flannery was involved in much of the match and tried to spring a few more chances but none came to fruition.
Teigan Collister - 7
Back in the starting lineup due to an injury to Annabel Martin. Collister was manning the left side of the pitch, but like most of her teammates spent the majority of the game playing defence with few offensive chances.
Subs
Lauren Allan (64’) - 7
Inserted into the lineup to try and help the Jets get some more offence. She was not able to do much for the Jets, but had a few good runs into the final third.
Panagiota Petratos (75’) - 7.5
Coming into the game for Flannery, trying to give the Jets that extra push to try for the equaliser did not happen. She was able to get quality minutes that can transfer to the next game.
Paige Kingston-Hogg (89’) - N/A
A very late sub that was not given much time to impact the game.
