Melbourne City are the best team in the land. This is not anything we learned. The rest of the W-League needs to work out: are they just in it to make the numbers, or is someone game enough to take them on?
THE BENCHMARK CLUB
City are not only the best women’s team in the land but they are the best women’s club in the land.
The investment City have made in their W-League program is something the rest of the league need to either compete with or just end up making the numbers.
City not only have a fantastic playing squad but their support staff is second to none.
From coaches to medical staff to media presence, Melbourne City give their ladies every chance to succeed on and off the field.
The benchmark club for Australian football.
THE INTIMIDATORS
City are intimidating. City are bullies.
City can roll into town and do what they want. They had 73% of the possession tonight as the Wanderers effectively handed over their lunch money without much of a fight.
When the Wanderers decided to play short out of the back, City harassed and hounded them into giving it back.
When the Wanderers went long, City were happy to just clean it up and then toy with them.
City had three times the number of passes the Wanderers had with 88% accuracy. They had 24 shots to four. They stuck 78% of their tackles.
At times it seemed like City had twice as many players. Alway first to the ball with everyone involved.
A masterful display from the best team in the land.
GLIMMERS OF HOPE REMAIN IN WANDERLAND
Courtney Newbon is a player of the future.
When you lose 4-0 but your goalkeeper is your best player it says something about the result.
While many of her team mates went missing tonight, Newbon bravely stood her post. Four excellent first half saves stopped the scoreline blowing out.
She faced 24 shots tonight but never wavered, reeling off seven saves overall. She can hold her head up high.
