Three things we learned tonight from the Melbourne derby.
1. City are starting to look dangerous
Despite a sluggish start to the season, Melbourne City are starting to find some form.
They dominated tonight. Victory defended well but the key stats from the game are telling.
61-39% territory
35-13 balls into the box
13-1 shots
7-0 corners
Victory are lucky City’s shots on goals didn’t really hit the target.
Casey Dumont saved Victory’s blushes tonight with an impressive game again including a penalty save.
The scary thing about City is they haven’t come close to hitting their straps but they are undefeated and sitting on top of the ladder with 13 points from five games.
2. Steph Catley is a gem
This isn’t anything we actually learned. We all know how good she is.
Tonight she ran herself ragged and put 12 balls into the box. She was relentless and it paid off in the last minute when she set up the winner for Yukari Kinga.
Her pace on the flanks makes her and Melbourne City always look dangerous especially when opposition teams tire out. Victory found this out the hard way tonight.
Her link up play with Kinga is beautiful to watch. With Ellie Carpenter on the other wing, opposing teams will sleep well after a match against City.
Catley chases hard in defence and provides an option in attack. What more could you ask from the Matilda’s star!
3. Thursday night football is a hit
Despite its criticism, a decent crowd turned out for the game considering the timing, weather and location.
The main stand was full and plenty of fans were standing up.
The TV ratings will be interesting but nothing better than a Thursday night watching W League with a hot cuppa or a nice meal.
Thursday night is supposed to be W League night and judging by the social media chatter, it is proving popular with the fans.
Free to air coverage needs to happen to get more fans.
With a finish like tonight and with so many stars on show, we need as many people to watch this.
