VAN EGMOND STILL SHINES IN NEWCASTLE

A Newcastle prodigy and longtime Jet, but this offseason van Egmond decided to change her allegiance to Melbourne City.

Before this season she has played for other teams other than Newcastle, but her career with the Jets has been the longest and it's her hometown club.

Van Egmond has scored 16 goals for Newcstle and quite a few on their home field. So it was only fitting that her first goal with Melbourne City happen on that same field.

And of course it had to be quite possible the best goal of the Round 1 around the league.

Claire Emslie had her back toward goal just outside the 18-yard box. She dropped the ball back to van Egmond who one timed a rocket of a shot into the lower left of the goal.

A sight Jets fans have seen often from van Egmond, but in today’s match it was in the wrong jersey.

Aside from the goal van Egmond was still quality for Melbourne City creating chances for her teammates and having her usual dominant way in the midfield.

She looked comfortable in City colors and van Egmond will be one the team will look to this season.

NEWCASTLE JETS ARE NO JOKE

They are too young. They don’t have any big name players to compete. The Jets are going to finish in last place.

Newcastle took all of these comments and waited until they stepped on the pitch to show their critics what they can do.

And they went toe-to-toe with the most star studded roster in the W-League and did not look the least bit intimidated.

The Jets went down 1-0 a little over 20 minutes into the game. But that did not hinder their spirit or make CIty look untouchable.

Instead Newcastle kept attacking and kept playing their game. They would find their equalizer in the 67th minute of play.

It was not some gimme from Melbourne City either. The Jets had a nice counter attack that led to a dazzle goal of their own that got past Lydia Williams, who also happens to be the Matildas starting goalkeeper.

Newcastle looked poised the entire game and were close to scoring the go ahead goal.

This tie with Melbourne CIty marks the first time that Newcastle has ever earned a single point against the club.

This year could be home to a lot of firsts for the club.

TROUBLING DAY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE

Coming into the season if you had made a Grand Final prediction of Melbourne City vs. Melbourne Victory you would have a solid prediction people would not think twice about.

But after today your prediction might turn a few heads.

Before City went up against Newcastle, Melbourne Victory played Sydney FC.

Now, Sydney is the defending champion, but Victory is thought to be a title contender this season. Sydney showed what a true title contender looks like after defeating Melbourne Victory 3-0.

Melbourne CIty followed that up with a tie to the Newcastle Jets for the first time in their existence.

A tie between Victory and City with a 3-0 win by City over the Jets was thought to be the more likely scenario.

Thankfully names on rosters and pedigrees are not what decides who wins in football.

Hats off to Sydney FC and Newcastle for impressive performances today.

For the two teams in Melbourne they want to go back to the drawing board and try to regroup for next week.
