Craig Deans has added some new and familiar Australian players to the Newcastle Jets W-League team for the 2017/18 season.
Hannah Brewer, Nikola Orgill and W-League debutante Tash Prior have signed for the Hunter club as part of their defensive unit.
A local product, 24 year old Brewer is a familiar sight for Jets fans after spending her first si W-League seasons at her hometown club.
Deans told the Newcastle Herald that the return of the right back is a great boon for what is shaping to once again be a young squad.
“Hannah brings a lot of experience and leadership, and obviously playing ability as well,” he said.
"She’s going to be a really good signing for us."
For Brewer, she believes she returns home an improved player after three seasons with Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City and Canberra United.
“There was nothing wrong with the Jets here but I was one of the more top players, you could say, and there were a lot of younger players under me," said Brewer.
"I still had way too much to learn to have players looking up to me, so it was a move I had to make.”
"I’m not coming to the end of my career yet but I think I’d like to finish here and be at one club for the rest of my time.”
Orgill joins after one season with the Western Sydney Wanderers and will be working to gain more game time than in her debut season.
Meanwhile Young Matildas defender Tash Prior is set for her first season in the league. Prior has been a part of the youth representative set up for a number of seasons and in the Football NSW Institute program and the NSW Premier League, has developed into a strong and composed centre back.
“Nik is super fit, she’s young and she wants to learn. She’ll be a versatile player for us.
“Tash is only young. She’s been around the Young Matildas squad for the last couple of years and has good football pedigree. She is a good, strong centre-back with some ability on the ball.”
The Jets finished fifth in Season 9 and Deans will be hoping the squad changes will see them taste finals action for the first time since Season 1.
To assist that Deans will be calling on an international striker, goalkeeper and midfielder to knit together a host of local and Australian talent.
