New Canberra United head coach Heather Garriock has announced the club’s first new signing with Matildas full back Ellie Carpenter committing to the capital side for Season 10 of the W-League.
Speculation of Carpenter’s new club commenced late last week after the teenager announced her departure from the club where she made her debut – the Western Sydney Wanderers.
Wishing the WSW Wanderwomen all the best for the 2017-18 W League season and thank you to WSW community for their support for the past two seasons. I will be forever grateful to the WSW for launching my career and for the fans who have supported me during my time at the club! Thank you. @wswanderersfc
Carpenter lined up for the Wanderers for two seasons making 23 appearances and working her way into the senior national team in 2016. The 17 year old made her Matildas debut at the Rio Olympic Qualifiers in March and was the youngest member of the Australian Olympic Team for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
“I am definitely very excited to be heading to Canberra for this season,” said Carpenter. “Being assistant coach of the Young Matildas and involved with the national team, it’s good to be with her, she’s a great coach and I’m looking forward to the season with her.”
“It is something new and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Carpenter is the second signing for the Premiers with the club confirming last week the re-signing of Matildas striker Michelle Heyman.
The defender will be part of a host of Young Matildas – up to six stated in a recent interview – that will be part of Canberra’s new look side.
“I’m very excited to have Ellie on board for the upcoming season,” Garriock said.
“She will bring strength, athleticism and aggression to our defence as well her attacking mindset and overlapping runs.”
“Having worked with her in the Young Matildas, Ellie was someone I really wanted to sign this season, so it’s great to have her on board already.”
Season 10 of the W-League is set to commence in late October 2017.
