World, AFC and South American champions potential opponents for Australia

The Matildas may be set for a host of tough opponents for the rest of the 2017 calendar year of friendlies according to Brazilian site Globo Esporte.

On reporting on the friendlies set for the Brazilian Women’s National Team, Globo Esporte also revealed some prospective opponents for Australia in the coming months, including a home friendly series in the September FIFA window.

Following on from a fourth placed finish at the 2017 Algarve Cup, Globo Esporte reports that Australia will take part in a four nations tournament in the United States – featuring the USA, Australia, Japan and Brazil – from 22 July to 3 August 2017.  The tournament would be a tough test for Australia with all nations residing in the FIFA Top 10.

It would be the first time Australia would face world champions the USA since the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup – a previous scheduled fixture aborted following Matildas industrial action in September 2015.

The next month would then see Australia host Brazil in a two match series from 11 – 19 September 2017, again with no firm dates or venues outlined.

NSW looks likely for one of the venues following the March 2016 agreement with the NSW Government that will see the Matildas play 6 matches in NSW for the 2016 – 2020 period.

Globo Esporte states all fixtures are subject to final contracts between the various federations.

It is anticipated that Australia will play between 8 – 10 internationals in 2017 as they work towards the 2018 AFC Asian Cup to be held in Jordan in April 2018.
