Junior Matildas qualify for 2017 AFC U16 Women’s Championships

The Junior Matildas have qualified for the 2017 AFC U16 Championships after a 6-0 win over hosts Vietnam at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre in Hanoi.

With Australia and Vietnam entering the match on the same number of points, the result would determine which of the two nations would progress to next year’s championship in China.

Australia managed the best possible start with India Kubin scoring in the opening five minutes to settle the nerves.  Kubin followed up her goal in the 13th minute to give the Junior Matildas a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into half time.

After the break Ante Juric’s side turned up the pressure with four goals at regular intervals to seal victory and keep them on top of Group D.  Australia has ensured their place at the finals with one match to go by virtue of a perfect record and a +49 goal difference advantage over their nearest rival Vietnam.

Australia’s final group match is on 3 September against Uzbekistan.
