Young Matildas draw 1-1 with hosts Myanmar, top Group B

In front of 22,000 people at Mandalay Stadium, Australia recorded a 1-1 draw with hosts Myanmar at the 2016 AFF Women’s Championships.

The result saw the Young Matildas secure top spot in Group B on their way to a semi final clash with defending champions Thailand.

Despite the vocal local home support, the Young Matildas started the match the better controlling much of the opening half play.

However Australia were made to pay for not converting their possession into goals with Khin Moe Wai 41st minute long distance strike giving Myanmar the lead heading into the break.

The second half saw the Young Matildas again keep Myanmar on the back foot and were rewarded late in the match with an equaliser through Cortnee Vine’s third goal of the tournament to ensure Craig Deans’ side would finish on top of the Group B standings.

Australia will now take on defending champions Thailand – lead by former Young Matildas coach Spencer Prior – for a place in the 2016 AFF Women’s Championship final.
