Two first half goals from Brisbane Roar striker Cortnee Vine was followed up by two late goals from captain Alex Chidiac and midfield Grace Maher to seal the Young Matildas’ win.
Australia controlled possession and the match from the opening minutes and it wasn’t long before they were on the scoreboard. A strong run from Princess Ibini on the right ended in the Sydney FC forward putting in a cross which was well finished from Vine.
Despite being on top Australia were unable to increase their lead with Maher going close in the 41st minute only to see her effort find the woodwork. Two minutes later the Ibini – Vine combination bore fruit again with Ibini providing another cross and Vine another finish to give Australia a cushion at the break.
The second half saw much of the same from Australia and in the 62nd minute they earned a penalty but Malaysian keeper Asma Junaidi, who kept Australia at bay for most of the match, guess the right way and made the save.
Malaysia’s big defensive workload finally told late in the match with Australia pushing on late with Chidiac and Maher wrapping up the match for Craig Deans’ side.
