Sam Kerr out for the rest of 2015/16 W-League season

Perth Glory captain and Matildas forward Sam Kerr has been ruled out for the season following a ruptured ligament in her foot.

Kerr sustained the injury in the 20th minute of the Glory’s clash with Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

“To say that I’m bitterly disappointed is an understatement.” said Kerr.

“I worked hard after undergoing surgery to my left knee at the end of last season and now this happens.”

Disappointed to lose his captain and key attacking threat, Glory coach Bobby Despotovski has indicated that a replacement striker will be sought.

“First of all my heart goes out to Sam. I can’t believe this has happened to her but knowing the fighter that she is, she will bounce back.”

“We’ll sit down and assess our options over the coming days and see if we can recruit a replacement striker,” he said.

The initial assessment suggested Kerr’s injury was not serious but further x-rays displayed a ligament rupture that means she will be out for the rest of the season.

The layoff means that for the second successive season, the forward will be racing to be fit for a major tournament for the Matildas.

“I’m thankful however, that it’s happened now and I have every chance to recover in time for the Rio Olympic qualifiers in March.”

“I would like to wish my teammates all the best for the remainder of the season and hope they take the positive energy from Sunday’s win into the rest of the season,” she said.

Kerr has scored one goal this season in four of the five W-League matches for Perth.
