The Matildas attack has received a boost with news that forward Sam Kerr is back training with the main squad at the AIS European Training Centre in Varese, Italy.

Kerr has been sidelined since sustaining a knee injury while playing for club side Perth Glory in their Round 12 loss to Canberra United.

Subsequent scans displayed damage to the joint surface cartilage of her left knee forcing the winger to undergo surgery, forgoing the W-League finals series.

The surgery was followed by 3 months of slow and methodical rehabilitation in Perth and at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra with Kerr joining the squad in Italy following the Matildas Cyprus Cup campaign.

The recovery of Kerr, who was arguably the most valuable player of the 2014 W-League season, is positive news for the Matildas less than three months out from the FIFA Women's World Cup.

In other good injury news Lydia Williams appears to be on track on returning in time for the World Cup after undergoing a second knee reconstruction in September 2014.

The news comes as Australia's goalkeeping stocks have taken a hit in the last two months with injuries to Casey Dumont (ACL), Melissa Barbieri (hamstring) and Brianna Davey (hip).

Williams also joined the main squad, along with Kerr, Tameka Butt and Aivi Luik, for the 3 week European training block which will culminate in internationals against Cameroon, Austria and Scotland.

Head coach Alen Stajcic has indicated that the returning trio will log minutes in those internationals as they look to get them to full match fitness.
