Canberra United goalkeeper Lydia Williams has become the latest Australian to join the NWSL after being signed by the Western New York Flash for the 2014 season.
Williams joins after Flash number 1 goalkeeper Adriana Franch was ruled out for 2014 due to a season ending ACL injury.
“After an unexpected season-ending injury in the first week, we’re very fortunate to be able to find a top goalkeeper that was available to come to our club right away,” said Flash general manager and head coach Aaran Lines.
“Lydia will be able to come in and impact our team immediately.”
The two time W-League Goalkeeper of the Year joins Sydney FC's Sam Kerr at the New York club and is excited to return to the US after a season with the Chicago Redstars (2009) in the former Women's Professional Soccer League.
“I’m really excited to be here, especially being able get involved with the club at the start of the season,” Williams said.
A long time Matildas member and with dual-citizenship of Australia and the United States, the 25 year old is a good fit for the Flash as an experienced goalkeeper and one who does not take up an international roster spot.
“I’m looking forward to playing with a world-renowned team that has a history of appearing in championships. I’m really excited to see what the season has to hold and to play in front of an American crowd.”
Williams takes the number of Australians in the NWSL to six.
