Leading up to the match against world no. 5 France, the European Tour had not been going well for Australia.

Losses to the Netherlands and then Dutch club side ADO Den Haag meant Australia were not expected to trouble the much fancied, and Euro 2013 favourites, France.

What happened was a mix of good defending, incredible goalkeeping, clinical finishing and luck – lots of luck.

Goals from Tameka Butt and arguably the Matildas Player of the Year Katrina Gorry saw the Matildas defeat France.

In between those goals was some brilliant defending by captain Clare Polkinghorne and an enthralling goalkeeper duel between Brianna Davey and Lydia Williams which demonstrated why they are amongst the best ‘keepers in the world.
